It is not possible to edit host discovery settings via the Web Client. However, you can still execute a discovery via a discovery bot.

Before you run a host discovery you will be presented with a number of options that allow you to control how the host discovery runs.

The host discovery settings dialog is divided into three main areas.

1 - List of host discoveries

This list contains all the host discoveries contained within these settings. More information can be found here.

2 - Discovery Update Properties

The discovery update properties define where discovery data is stored and what action occurs once a discovery is complete. More information can be found here.

3 - Specific Host Discovery Settings

This section contains settings that are specific to the select host discovery. Detailed information about all the host discoveries can be found here.

Adding Host Discoveries

Host discoveries are added by clicking the Add button. This will display a drop down menu.

Select a discovery type to add it to the list.

Manipulating Host Discoveries

Host Discoveries can be deleted by clicking the Delete button. They can be moved up and down in the list by clicking the Move Up and Move Down buttons respectively.

Saving/Loading(Importing/Exporting Host Discovery Settings.

Click the Save as button to save the host discovery settings to a file on the server. To load a settings file from the server click the Load button.

When you close the settings form the current settings will be saved on the server as a file named "Default". This will be the file that is opened the next time you run a host discovery from within the Client.

In addition, Host Discovery settings can be saved to a local file by clicking the Export button. They can be imported from a local file by clicking the Import button.

Options

Clicking the Options button will display the host discovery options dialog. The options dialog consists of 3 tabs. The fist of these is the General tab.

Maximum Simultaneous Discoveries

This option sets the maximum number of discoveries that can be performed simultaneously. The slower your machine/network, the lower this value should be.

Maximum IP Block Size

This value sets the number of IP addresses records that are read from the server in a single operation. Once they have been read they are added to the ready queue and will be discovered when a place becomes available.

Pre-loaded IP Blocks

Adjust this value to set the number of IP Blocks that are buffered ready for discovery. If you have a lot of small subnets you will probably want to increase this value a little.

Maximum Update Queue Size

Change this value to set how many discovered IP Blocks can be in the update queue before the updates are forced to the server.

Maximum Serious Errors

If too many errors occur it may indicate that the server is down or the connection has been lost. This value will allow you to automatically cancel the discovery if too many errors occur.

Only Discover IP Addresses that already exist

When checked, only IP addresses that already exist in the database will be discovered. If it is left unchecked, every possible IP address in the subnet will be scanned.

The second tab is Post Discovery.

Email Discovery Report

When this option is checked, the host discovery report will be emailed to the recipients. Before this can happen an administrator must set the Email Server settings.

Recipients

A list or email addresses that will receive the host discovery report. Separate individual addresses with commas.

Include Log

When checked, the full host discovery log will be included in the report.

Include List of new IP Addresses

If you select this option, all the IP addresses that were added to the database will be listed in the report.

The third tab is Logs.

Write Log File

Writes a host discovery log file.

Append data and time to log file name

When checked, the full host discovery log filename will have the date and time appended to it.

Display Debug Messages

If you select this option, debug messages will be added to the log.

Display individual discovery debug information

Checking this option will generate detailed debug information for each individual discovery e.g. ping, ARP lookup etc. Note that enabling this option can significantly slow down the host discovery. It is however very useful for debugging complex host discoveries. It is a good idea to set Maximum Simultaneous Discoveries to 1 when using this option. This allows you to clearly see the progression of a single IP discovery at a time.

Discovery Update Properties

The discovery update properties allow you to control if a discovery runs, where a discovery's results are stored and what happens after the discovery has completed.

Discovery Name

The descriptive name of the host discovery.

Only run discovery if field contains text

When checked, the discovery will only be run if the selected field contains some specific text. For example, this is useful when running ARP Table Scanner discoveries to make sure that the discovery is only run on routers.

Discovery Result Name

Most discoveries only have a single result type. However, some discoveries such as ping, return several results. Combined with the Result Destination Field, this setting allows you to place specific results in specific fields.

Result Destination Field

This setting dictates where the selected Discovery Result will be stored.

Only update if the destination field is empty

When checked, the field data will only be updated if the field is already empty. When not checked, the field contents will always be updated regardless of their current content.

Discovery Input Source Field

Some discoveries require data other than the IP address to run. When this is the case, the Discovery Input Source Field allows you to select the field from which you want to retrieve the data. This setting is used in conjunction with Discovery Input Name.

Discovery Input Name

This setting is used with Discovery Input Source Field to define the data origin for a discovery's specific input requirements.

Post Discovery Action

Change this setting to define what happens when the discovery has completed. By default, the next discovery in the list will be executed. By altering the value you can:

Skip to a discovery if no results are returned.
Skip to a discovery if results are returned.
Abort the discovery group if no results are returned.
Abort the discovery group if results are returned.

When used in conjunction with a ping discovery, this option allows you to skip additional discoveries if the host does not respond to an echo request.

Schedule a Host Discovery

Host discoveries can be scheduled to perform whenever you need them to. To schedule a host discovery, define it's settings then click Schedule. After saving the host discovery settings you will be presented with the Schedule Wizard. Note that under Windows Vista and Windows 7 the scheduling process requires elevation. This is done automatically. All you need to do is answer Yes when asked if you want to allow the program to make changes to your computer.

The first page of the schedule wizard allows you to select which groups/subnets you want to discover. Once you are happy, click Next. The rest of the scheduling process is common to all types of scheduling in Easy-IP. More information can be found here.

Discover via Bot

Discovery Bots allow you to run host discoveries on remote networks. Clicking the Discover via Bot button will select the Discovery Bot on which you want to run the host discovery.

The list displays all the available Discovery Bots along with their current status and how many discoveries are waiting in the Bot's queue. Once queued, the progress of your discoveries can be viewed via the Bot Discoveries form. This form will be displayed automatically when you click OK.

In order for a Discovery Bot to appear in the list, it must have been installed and configured on a remote machine. For more information, see Installing and Configuring Discovery Bots.
